Former Lab Members

Check out what former lab members are doing. Here is information about people who used to work in the lab, since 2000.

Postdocs, Visiting Professors, Research Associates:

Gergely Boros was a postdoc in the Vanni lab in 2012. He is a researcher at the Balaton Limnological Institute in Hungary.

Christian Nozais was a visiting professor from the University of Quebec, Rimouski in 2011-2012.

Shuaiying Zhao was a visiting researcher from China in 2010-2011. He is currently a professor at Yunan Normal University, China.

Amanda Spivak was a postdoc in the lab in 2008-09 and is now an Assistant Scientist in the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Luciana Carneiro was a visiting PhD student from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Luciana is now an assistant professor at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte in Natal, Brazil.

Annie Bowling was Research Associate for several years, and before that an undergraduate student in the lab. She finished her MS in Zoology at Miami, working with Jim Oris in ecotoxicology. She is currently working at Indiana University in Jim Royer's lab.

Chip Glaholt was a Master's student and published his MS research in Freshwater Biology (Glaholt and Vanni 2005). Chip later was a Research Associate in the lab, and is now in a similar position at Indiana University.

Peter Levi was a Research Associate from 2004-2006. He received his PhD in Ecology at the University of Notre Dame, and is currently a post doc at Aarhus University, Denmark.

Tera Ratliff was an undergraduate student and a Research Associate from 2004-2005 and is currently a Research Associate at Miami University, working with Melany Fisk.

Weston Nowlin was a postdoc from 2004-2005 and is now an Assistant Professor at Texas State University-San Marcos.

Graduate Students:

Mia Hall finished her Master's degree in 2012 and is now working with Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio.

Lesley Knoll finished her PhD in 2011, and is now the Director of Research and Education at Lacawac Sanctuary in Pennsylvania.

Susanna Scott was a PhD student from 2009-2011. She now works as an Environmental Scientist at Crouch Environmental in Texas.

Freya Rowland finished her MS in 2010 and is working as a water quality specialist with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

Allie Babler finished her MS in summer 2009 and is now teaching middle school science for Winona School District in Minnesota.

Alberto Pilati finished his PhD in 2007 and is now a faculty member at the Universidad Nacional de la Pampa in Santa Rosa, Argentina. Papers based on Alberto's dissertation include Pilati and Vanni (2007) in Oikos and Pilati et al. (2009) in Ecological Applications .

Lisette Torres finished her Master's in 2005 and is working on a doctorate in education. Her MS work focused on variation in nutrient cycling rates among fish species, and was published in Oikos (Torres and Vanni 2007).

Marty Horgan finished his PhD in the lab in 2005 and subsequently worked with María González for a post doc.

Leah Laurich finished her Master's in 2005. She is currently a professor at the University of St. Thomas.

Karen Higgins (formerly Sigler) finished her Master's in the lab in 2002 and is now working for the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Karen published her MS work in Oikos (Higgins et al 2006).

Jim Hood finished his Master's in 2000, which resulted in a paper on phosphorus limitation in tropical stream fish (Hood et al. 2005). Jim is now a post doc at Montana State University.

Undergraduate Students:

Luis Perez-Leon was an REU student in the Vanni lab in the summer of 2012. He is currently a student at the University of Puerto Rico.

Michael Wade-Wolfe worked in the Vanni lab during the summer of 2012.

Chris Marsman was an undergraduate Zoology major and graduated in 2012. He currently works for Miami University's Outdoor Pursuit Center.

Ghasak Al-Obaidi worked in the Vanni lab in 2012.

John Eick was an undergraduate student in the lab and graduated in 2011.

Jessica Gephart was an undergraduate student in the lab who graduated in 2011. She is now a PhD student in Mike Pace's lab at the University of Virginia.

Tyler Field was a REU student in the summer of 2010.

Heather Drake was an undergraduate student from Georgetown College. She worked in the lab in the summer of 2010.

Megan Sabal was an undergraduate student in the lab, and graduated in 2010.

Beth Brownson worked as an undergraduate student in the lab from 2008-2010.

Katrina Barnes was an undergraduate student in the lab and graduated in 2009.

Martin Wunderly worked in the lab in the summer of 2009 while he worked on a Master's degree in IES at Miami.

Grexi Mercado was an REU student in the lab in the summer of 2009.

Mitch Manor was an undergraduate student in the lab and graduated in 2009.

Jill Goodwin was an undergraduate student in the lab and graduated in 2010. She is in medical school at Marshall University in West Virginia.

Ryan Batt was an undergraduate student in the lab and graduated with majors in Zoology and Environmental Science in 2009. He is now a graduate student at the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kelley Bricker was an undergraduate in the lab and graduated in 2009 with a degree in Microbiology. She received her Master's degree in Education at Miami University and currently teaches at Waynesville High School.

Sarah Panek worked as an undergraduate in the lab and graduated in 2009 with majors in Zoology and Environmental Science. After that, she got a Master's in Environmental Science at the University of Toledo.

Sandy Specter worked as an undergraduate in the lab and graduated in 2009. She is currently applying to Physician's Assistant programs.

Beth Dittman (formerly Cable) worked as an undergraduate in the lab from 2006-2008, and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry. She obtained a Master's degree in ecotoxicology at North Carolina State University, where she currently works as a program coordinator for the Biology Department.

Sonii Kollie was an REU student from Rutgers University who worked in the lab during the summers of 2006 and 2007. Sonii graduated from Rutgers in 2008.

Allison Gardner worked as an undergraduate student in 2006 and is working as a nutritionist.

Alicia Gaulke worked as an undergraduate from 2003-2006 and recently finished her MS in Marine Sciences at the University of North Carolina. She is a co-author on Pilati et al. (2009) and published her master's research on picoplankton.

Jen Newell (formerly Bobson) worked as an undergraduate from 2004-2005. She finished her MS in Zoology at Miami and is now teaching biology at Granville High School in Columbus, Ohio. Jen published some of her MS research in PNAS (Dickman et al. 2008).

Jenni Wanders worked in the lab as an undergraduate from 2003-2005 and is now a graduate student in education.

Corey Pray was an undergraduate student in the lab from 2004-2005 and is now a graduate student in ecology at Texas State University-San Marcos

Katy Stradley was an undergraduate in the lab from 2003-2005 and is now in dental school at Indiana University.

Grace Gordon worked as an undergraduate from 2002-2004 and is now working in environmental education.

Scott Andrews was an undergraduate in the lab from 2001-2003 and is now in pharmacy school at the University of Cincinnati. Scott's REU project was published in Vanni et al. 2006.

Jenny Schafer worked in the lab as an undergraduate from 2000-2001. She is now a post doc at North Carolina State University.

Lindsay Spigel (formerly Theis) was an undergraduate in the lab from 1999-2000. She earned her PhD in Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied sedimentation in floodplain lakes.
