Software Asset Management
With the endorsement of the Information Technology Strategic Advisory Council (ITSAC), a Software Asset Management (SAM) program has been initiated to assist university offices in controlling software spending, tracking software purchases and ensuring compliance with all license agreements.
Rationale for Practicing SAM
- Stewardship: Software is a university asset
- Cost savings: volume or educational purchases lead to big discounts
- Compliance: Miami could be held liable for unlicensed software that is installed on institutional computers, whether intentionally or unintentionally. The consequences could include being required to purchase additional software, pay fines, and undergo a resource-intensive audit process.
