Metaphor as Technology

Reading Kuhn

Read through Newton's Principia and Aristotle's Physics, underlining each place in which they use the word "motion." In your notes, jot down the examples if any that they give of motion. Notice that Newton is talking about "bodies" -- i.e., inanimate objects, while Aristotle is talking about motion in human terms -- one of his examples is a teacher!! Notice that Kuhn helps us understand how Aristotle is thinking about motion by coming up with Aristotle's central metaphor for the way things work in the universe, the "sponge" metaphor.
