Ohio Student Residency

Regarding Miami University and Ohio Residency Regulations

In its assessment of a student's eligibility for classification as an Ohio resident for tuition purposes, Miami University is obliged to apply the residency eligibility criteria established by Ohio Revised Code 3333.31 and Ohio Administrative Code 3333-1-10.  (click below)

Miami University is not empowered to alter or waive these state regulations, and must enforce their provisions for all students under all personal and/or financial circumstances.

Students strongly are advised to fully apprise themselves of the criteria established by Ohio Revised Code and Ohio Administrative Code prior to seeking classification as an Ohio Resident for-tuition-purposes.

Students who are classified as residents for tuition purposes receive the benefit of a state-supported education, funded primarily by the taxpayers of Ohio. The residency rules are, therefore, meant to exclude from resident classification those people who are in the state of Ohio primarily for the purpose of receiving the benefit of a state- supported education.

Initial residency classifications are determined at the time a student is admitted to Miami University. Any student classified as a nonresident of the state of Ohio for tuition purposes who feels he/she qualifies according to the Ohio Board of Regents (OBOR) Residency Rules may apply for residency status by submitting an Application for Resident Classification for Tuition Purposes along with supporting documentation.

If upon reviewing the Residency Rules a student feels he/she qualifies for Ohio residency status, the student may submit a complete Application for Resident Classification for Tuition Purposes, along with supporting documentation. (Click below) for a PDF version of the application. Complete applications must be received at the Office of the Registrar at least 30 days prior to the start of the eligibility term. Decisions are not retroactive. Each application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis for strict compliance with the stated OBOR Residency Rules. Students will be notified in writing, and by regular U.S. mail delivery, of the decision on their application for residency status.

Students who have general questions after reviewing the OBOR residency rules may submit their questions by email to: residency@miamioh.edu. Please allow 2 business days for a response. While we are always happy to respond to general questions, we cannot advise students on how to qualify for Ohio residency nor render decisions based on informal inquiries.
