Assessment is the systematic collection, review,
and use of information about educational programs
undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning
and development (Palomba & Banta, 1999). The Higher
Learning Commission, which is part of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools (Miami
University's regional accrediting body), includes
assessment of student learning in its accreditation
criteria. Many programmatic accrediting bodies
(e.g., ABET for Engineering
or NCATE for Teacher
Education) encourage or require evidence of assessment
of student learning as part of their accreditation
The Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELTUA) has primary responsibility for coordinating and supporting assessment efforts at Miami University. The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) supports Miami University's assessment efforts in multiple ways. OIR staff are members of the University Assessment Team, which guides and implements many of the university's assessment activities. OIR also provides data and analyses for assessment-related activities, such as accreditation, provides consultations for offices that are designing surveys for assessment, and oversees Miami's participation in several national surveys and projects that are used for assessment purposes (e.g., the National Survey of Student Engagement).
