Study Abroad Scholarships

Many scholarship applications are available online for your convenience. In order to give yourself the best advantage, we strongly recommend that you consult with your academic advisers and study abroad adviser for assistance in completing the forms, especially with the personal statements and appropriate budget information. It may also be useful to meet with a consultant at the Howe Center for Writing Excellence who can give you feedback on your personal statement.

Office of International Education-Administered Scholarships

A GPA of at least 2.5 is required for all OIE-administered scholarships unless otherwise noted. Contact Karla Guinigundo for more information on these scholarships and how to apply.

Havighurst International Minority Scholarship

Available to undergraduate students of Native American, African-American, Hispanic-American and Asian-American ethnicity with financial need for use on any semester- or year-long Miami University Sponsored, Exchange or Co-Sponsored program.

Koons Family, Osgood, Resor and Snyder International Exchange Scholarships

Available to students participating in ISEP Exchanges.

Karen Ostberg Award

Available to undergraduate students participating in semester- or year-long Miami Sponsored, Co-Sponsored or Exchange programs outside of Luxembourg.

WCAA International Exchange Scholarship

Available to undergraduate students participating in exchange programs.

Study Abroad Airfare Grant

Miami students with demonstrated need are eligible for up to $600 in the form of an airfare grant and may receive the remainder of the ticket price in the form of an interest-free university loan. For semester- or year-long study abroad programs only. Contact Office of Student Financial Assistance for information.

Cable Scholarships

Available to undergraduate students studying abroad for a semester or year on a Sponsored, Co-Sponsored or Exchange program, who receive (or are eligible for) Pell Grants and who have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Sponsored by the Western College Alumnae Association.

Higgin Kim Asia Business Scholarship

The Higgin Kim Asia Business Scholarship is funded through the generous donations of Miami alumus Mr. Higgin Kim. This $1,000 scholarship can be applied to any of the FSB programs in Korea, Japan and Vietnam. Both need and merit will be taken into consideration.

Lifelong Learning Faculty-led International Workshop Award

Twelve $1000 awards for use on a Miami Study Abroad Credit Workshop. Available only to currently enrolled Miami students. Contact the Office of Lifelong Learning for applications and deadline (typically late January or early February).

Richard Moon Su Park and Elinora Bo Hyun Park Korea Scholarship

The Park Korea Scholarship is made possible by the generous endowment from the Park family. It can be applied to any FSB program in Korea. Awards are in the amount of $1,000 or more, and are based on need and merit.

Salt and Zimmerman Scholarships

Available to undergraduate students who receive (or are eligible for) Pell Grants and who are studying abroad on a semester- or year-long Miami Sponsored, Co-Sponsored or Exchange program. Sponsored by the Western College Alumnae Association.

Von Tacky Scholarship

Available to undergraduate students who show financial need, and limited to students studying for a semester or year in Africa, Asia, Latin America or the Middle East. Sponsored by the Western College Alumnae Association.

External scholarships supported by the Office of International Education for use with Miami Sponsored, Exchange, Co-Sponsored, Approved and Non-Miami Programs (as indicated)

Boren Scholarships/Fellowships (NSEP)

Funding for undergraduate and graduate study abroad (with foreign language study as an integral part of the program) in countries not including Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. Contact Richard Menard, Office of International Education for information and assistance.

Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes

Applies only to designated summer institutes (see website). U.S. Government-sponsored scholarships for students wishing to study critical languages (including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean and Russian) at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners during the summer. All program costs are covered by this scholarship. Check with a study abroad adviser to be sure that your chosen institute can transfer credit to Miami.

Freeman-Asia Awards

Awards for undergraduate study in east or southeast Asia for a minimum of 8 weeks in the summer or 12 weeks in the semester. 2.8 GPA required.

Gilman International Scholarship

U.S. State Department-sponsored program for undergraduate study abroad through any program for which Miami will accept transfer credit. Applicants must currently be receiving Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study, Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans or Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants. Program must be longer than 4 weeks. Pending: The University of Virginia offers three tuition reductions of $1,000 each to students nominated by Miami's Department of Spanish and Portuguese for use on the University of Virginia program at Valencia. Contact Dr. Patricia Klingenberg for more information on this tuition reduction.

The largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. The Rhodes Scholarships

Open to U.S. citizens 18-24 years old, who have earned a Bachelor's degree. Provides for paid study for two to three years at one of the colleges of Oxford University.
