Dublin schools to 'grow' own principals

Beginning this summer, teachers in the Dublin City School District interested in becoming principals will be able to complete a master’s program offered by Miami University without leaving home.

An innovative partnership between Miami and Dublin City Schools will allow teachers to pursue a master’s degree program with a principal’s licensure. The program blends traditional classroom instruction with on-line components. Full-time faculty from Miami’s Department of Educational Leadership (EDL) will teach the 14-month program, which begins this summer with an intensive two-week institute. All classes will be held in Dublin schools.

The partnership meets the needs of the school district, prospective principals and Miami, said Kate Rousmaniere, EDL chair.

The collaborative effort will allow the school district to prepare principals from among its own teaching staff. “The partnership addresses the increasing demands on school leaders, by offering coursework that is embedded in the districts’ current challenges and that draws on Dublin administrators’ expertise,” she said.

Guiding the revisions to Miami’s current program for future principals is the new state licensure framework that focuses on ensuring that all students develop 21st century skills through school and district collaborative teams, using data for decision-making, engaging community support, and allocating resources to achieve district goals in a process of continuous improvement. The new hybrid format will combine scheduling flexibility and creative coursework with traditional face-to-face instruction and advising.

Two groups of 20 Dublin employees will move through the one year, 33-credit hour program, with the first group beginning this summer. Miami expects to offer similar master’s programs with principal licensure to school districts throughout southwest Ohio after the two-year Dublin project is completed.
