Breakfast begins at 7:00. Speaker will begin at 8:00.

Mary Flanagan will present works in which the creation of software bridges commonly held notions about art, education, and social action. Central to the discussion will be the role of code in a range of pieces. She will present some of her computer based artworks as well as activist design projects. As many questions arise at this intersection as are answered, promising an opportunity for lively debate. How does the act of writing code also create a world view? Does activism equate to being able to program? Do digital artworks truely challenge the role of the art object? What are ways in which conscientious designers and artists can engage with the deeper levels of ideology inherent in code culture?

Mary Flanagan holds an MFA from the University of Iowa and a PhD from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. She is an internationally exhibiting artist with work shown at the Whitney Museum, the Moving Image Centre in Auckland, Artist's Space, A.I.R. Gallery, the New York Hall of Science, and the Guggenheim Museum among other international venues; her creative writing work has appeared in _3rd Bed_ and _How2_. In addition to digital art and text, she produces nonfiction academic studies focusing on games, digital art, and cyberculture. Her two most recent publications are the co-edited volume of fiction and theory, _reload: rethinking women and cyberculture_ (MIT Press 2002) and the co-authored book _Similitudini. Simboli. Simulacri_ (SIMilarities, Symbols, Simulacra) in Italian. (Unicopli, 2003). Her recent essay is a blend of critical and experimental writing entitled "Reskinning the Everyday," and will be published in 2006 with MIT Press in _reskin_. Can computer code be a primary expressive medium, or is it simply an applied form of mathematics–a medium of production and analysis. Is there a materiality to code, a symbolic evocation that transcends literal meaning. How does coding style figure into the meaning of software? Is there an aesthetic value to coding style, independent of code execution? Should algorithmic efficiency be the dominate organizing force in coding? Is coding ultimately a legacy, even romantic, approach to writing software–to eventually be automated by the computer? These and similarly challenging questions will be discussed by our panel of leading code artists. Audience participation will be encouraged, and we look forward to a very lively debate.

Format for all Discussion Sessions: Papers are presented for 20 minutes each, there there will be a moderated discussion for the next 35 minutes. Each session will have an appointed discussion leader in addition to the presenters.
