Major Teaching Project for Individual or Small Groups of Faculty

Purpose and Description

These grants are to encourage individuals to engage in innovations that are consistent with university goals, e.g., diversity initiatives, implementation of curricular renovation at the university, divisional or department/program levels, or engaged learning across the curriculum. We strongly encourage the development of proposals that will try an innovative approach to a course (or small number of courses) and have the potential to be generalizable to other similar courses. The project should involve activities beyond teaching preparation normally expected of faculty at Miami. All applications should include assessment of effectiveness of this planned change at two levels: how will you measure impact of the change on student learning in this course, how will you evaluate the impact of this change on other similar courses? A formal Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project may be planned. SoTL projects must obtain IRB approval. If your project involves course design, we encourage you to consult with the instructional designers in Advanced Learning Technologies.

Example: A project might determine the extent to which cooperative learning, service learning, or technology has been integrated into a department's curriculum, how this pedagogy compares with other benchmark programs, and how it affects students and alumni. The project may then embed more service learning or technology into a new or existing course, and assess the effectiveness of this innovation on student learning. The proposer will plan to share the results of the project with other faculty with similar courses, and plans to submit it to the Lilly Conference.

Funding and Allowable Expenses

These $3,000 awards may be used for summer salary, materials, travel, conference/webinar registration, student wages, visiting scholar or consultant, participant reimbursement (for SoTL projects). If you are considering summer salary, be aware that because income tax and fringe benefits are withheld from the portion you designate as salary, you receive more of the $3,000 by designating as much as possible for expenses. In order to award salary, the committee needs strong evidence that this work goes above and beyond your normal teaching preparation duties. Equipment purchased remains the property of Miami. Funds for expenses are accessed through the usual Miami requisitions and travel forms. These funds come from a limited pool to be disbursed over the academic year until funds are depleted.

Eligibility

Major grants are open to continuing members of the instructional staff who teach credit courses at least halftime. Individuals can receive these only once per 3 years. In addition to the above requirements, if the funding is taken as summer pay, grant recipients must remain on the Miami instructional staff during the academic year following the summer grant. Two or more faculty may submit proposals for a single grant. If summer pay is involved, specify division of payment in a separate memo included with the proposal. Summer pay is used to support projects you develop during any specified six-week period within the summer session. You must agree to have no administrative or instructional duties and to devote full time to your project during this period.

Selection Criteria

Criteria includes the items listed in the Proposal Guidelines and Outline. CELTUA may direct its chair to obtain additional information about some proposals.

Follow-up

In September in each of the first two years following the academic year in which the grant occurs, the recipient(s) shall submit a concise report of the project to director of CELTUA, with a copy to the chair of the CELTUA committee. Both reports must include results and outcomes of the evaluation and impact of the solution to the problem and assessment of student learning posed in the proposal. These reports will be available for reading by members of the University community. Recipients who have received IRB approval are encouraged to present a paper on or discussion of their project at a Lilly Conference on College Teaching.
